The Best Irish Pub Games You Need to Try

Latest News

When you think of Irish pubs, it’s not just the trad music and delicious pints that make them special, it’s the lively atmosphere and the classic pub games that bring people together. There’s no better way to experience an Irish pub than by diving into a few rounds of games, from traditional to modern. In this blog, we’re taking you through some of our favourite pub games that you must try on your next visit to an Irish pub.

Darts

We’re kicking things off with an absolute pub classic – Darts, a game as much a part of the Irish pub experience as a pint of Guinness. At many pubs around the country, you can step up to the oche (that’s the throwing line) and aim for a bullseye, or maybe just try to keep your score out of the negatives!

No matter if you’re a seasoned pro or trying it out for the first time, darts is a fantastic game for adding a bit of friendly competition to your night. It’s easy to get the hang of, and you’ll find yourself coming back for another round once the pub atmosphere pulls you in. Grab a pint, gather a few friends, and take aim – there’s no better way to pass the time in an Irish pub.

Rings

Next up is a real Irish classic – Rings. This game has been part of the Irish pub culture for generations and is still going strong in pubs all over the country. The rules are simple: players take turns throwing rubber rings onto hooks attached to a board, aiming to land the rings on specific hooks for points. Now, don’t let the game’s simplicity fool you, it takes skill and precision, and the competition can get fierce!

Rings is perfect for a laid-back but fun challenge over a few pints with friends. It’s a favourite for both locals and visitors who are looking to experience a traditional Irish game with plenty of laughs and good-natured competition. Give it a go, and who knows, you might be the next Rings champion!

Jenga

If you’re in the mood for something a little more playful, Jenga is a sure-fire hit. This classic is a staple in-house game in many pubs across Dublin. Players simply take turns removing one block at a time from a tower and placing it back on top. The challenge? Not to be the one who sends the whole thing crashing down. With every pull of a block, the tension builds, and so do the laughs – Jenga is perfect for groups and creates a great atmosphere when played in the pub.

Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is the perfect card game for those who enjoy a bit of friendly competition, strategy, and a chance to show off their quick thinking. Popular in pubs because of its easy-to-learn rules and fast-paced nature, Gin Rummy is ideal for pairs or small groups looking to pass the time over a pint because it offers the perfect balance of focus and fun. The objective is simple: players try to form sets or runs of 3 or more cards before their opponent does.

So, next time you’re visiting The Temple Bar Pub or any Irish pub, sit back with your friends, shuffle up the deck, and get right into it.

25

For a true taste of traditional Irish pub culture, try your hand at 25 – Ireland’s national card game. The game is fast-paced, and trick-taking, and has been a favourite in Ireland for generations, especially in rural areas and among pub-goers as it can be played by 2-8 people at a time. It’s a bit like a local version of hearts or spades; each player is dealt five cards and players take turns playing one card each. The highest card wins the round (lift) and earns 5 points and the first player to win five lifts (reach 25 points) wins the game!

While it might take a round or two to get the hang of the rules, once you do, you’ll see why 25 is a favourite game in Irish pubs. The quick rounds and the competitive nature of the game make it a fun way to pass the time.

Pub Quiz

Nothing brings a crowd together quite like a good old-fashioned pub quiz. In Ireland, pub quiz nights are all about testing your knowledge on a wide range of topics, from pop culture and music to history and general trivia. Gather your team, grab a drink, and get ready to flex your brainpower!

The best part about a pub quiz is that you don’t need to be a trivia whiz to enjoy it, sometimes the silliest answers spark the biggest laugh! Pub quizzes are a great way to bring everyone together for a night of light-hearted fun. And look, who knows – you might even win some prizes along the way!

Pool

Pool is one of those timeless pub games that’s a mix of strategy, skill, and sometimes, pure luck. Whether you’re aiming for the perfect shot or just hoping not to pot the white ball, pool is a fun way to unwind with friends. Many bars and pubs around Ireland have a pool table in-house that acts as a gathering point, and a place where visitors can challenge their pals to a game. Playing pool in an Irish pub is also a fantastic way to meet new people, as games are often shared between strangers who end up becoming fast friends over a pint and some friendly competition.

Bingo

Bingo is a classic that never goes out of style, and it’s no surprise that it’s made its way into Irish pubs. Many Irish pubs will host bingo nights for a bit of fun and laughter for patrons! The game is simple: players are given cards with numbers, and as the numbers are called out, they mark them off. The aim is to complete a full row or card, and then yell “Bingo!” to claim victory.

What makes bingo such a hit in pubs is its inclusivity – local or tourist, young or old, everyone can join in. And even if you don’t win, you’re guaranteed plenty of craic along the way.
