The Rose of Tralee is an international festival and one of Ireland’s largest and longest running since 1959. It now runs for five days every August in the southwest of Ireland in Tralee, County Kerry, drawing over 200,000 visitors from around the world. It’s broadcast in Ireland and watched annually by over a million people. We also play it live in The Temple Bar Pub.
Explaining The Rose Of Tralee to Someone Living Outside Of Ireland
The main element of the festival is the selection and celebration of the Rose of Tralee, which involves young women of Irish descent from Ireland and around the world. Over 30 Roses venture to Tralee each year to compete, and this year Ireland saw 17 international Roses representing communities outside of Ireland, from Arizona to New York to Sydney, Toronto or Dubai. The essence of the festival is based on the popular song called ‘The Rose of Tralee’.
The festival consists of far more than just the selection of the Rose of Tralee. There are family carnivals in the town of Tralee, a fashion show and live concerts. The town’s streets are transformed with music, funfairs, markets and live traditional Irish music.
What the Roses Themselves Say About the Festival
When interviewed, the Roses didn’t speak about winning. They spoke about the ‘opportunity to be their authentic selves’, about public speaking and about demonstrating their Irish sense of pride, culture and heritage. For the international Roses especially, the festival is about community. As this year’s Arizona Rose put it, they are there for each other for “the celebrations and the sad moments”. Taking part lets them “reconnect with their roots”, and by every account it’s a wonderful experience.
How the Rose is Chosen
The winning Rose is deemed the most ‘lovely and fair’, the attributes relevant to the song. She’s selected on personality and on being a good role model. In contrast to beauty pageants, there is no swimwear section and contestants are not judged on appearance but on their overall personality and suitability. Each Rose also does a party trick on stage, from Irish dancing to singing or stand up comedy.
Who Won the 2026 Rose of Tralee?
The 2026 Rose of Tralee was Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh, the Westmeath Rose. The 25 year old was crowned by TV and radio presenters Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas. Caoilfhinn works in retail and is studying to become a wig maker, a path she took after losing her hair to alopecia at 15.
